Modern Apartment Renovation in Heraklion
About the project
This apartment renovation project in Heraklion involves the complete architectural redesign of an existing ground-floor residence. The goal is to transform the property into a contemporary and highly functional home tailored to the needs of a modern family.
The project focuses on reinterpreting the existing structural layout while introducing a new spatial organisation, upgraded energy systems and a refined contemporary interior design.
The Challenge
One of the main challenges of this apartment renovation in Heraklion was the presence of the existing structural frame. Several structural columns were located in the centre of the floor plan, influencing the spatial organisation of the apartment.
Rather than treating these elements as constraints, the design integrates them into the overall interior concept, allowing the architecture to evolve around the structural grid.
Additionally, the apartment is located at ground level with its front façade directly facing the street, leaving no space for a front balcony. This required a different approach to outdoor living spaces.
Our Approach
Spatial Organisation
The apartment is organised around an open-plan living area that combines the living room, dining area and kitchen. This central space acts as the social core of the home.
A transition zone was designed at the entrance to gradually lead visitors into the main living space. Suspended ceilings and integrated lighting were introduced to enhance spatial hierarchy and create a more contemporary interior atmosphere.
Private areas such as the bedrooms and service spaces are fully separated from the main living area, ensuring privacy and acoustic comfort.
Bedrooms and Private Areas
The apartment includes two spacious bedrooms designed for comfort and autonomy.
Each bedroom has its own private bathroom, while the master bedroom also includes a dedicated dressing room. Both bedrooms open towards the rear courtyard, creating a calmer and more private relationship with the outdoor space.
Additional service areas were designed to accommodate laundry functions, including a washing machine and dryer.
Interior Materials and Atmosphere
The interior design follows a modern aesthetic defined by darker tones combined with natural wood finishes.
This palette creates a warm and balanced atmosphere throughout the residence. Lighting plays a key architectural role, with concealed lighting elements and linear fixtures emphasising the geometry of the spaces.
Structural and Energy Upgrade
Beyond the architectural redesign, the project includes structural reinforcement studies and significant energy upgrades.
The building envelope is improved through external thermal insulation, while the heating system is based on a heat pump combined with ceiling heating and closed-type fan coils.
These interventions significantly improve energy efficiency and indoor comfort.
Outdoor Courtyard Design
Since the front façade of the apartment faces the street, the outdoor living area was relocated to the rear side of the property.
A private courtyard was designed to function as a quiet outdoor relaxation space for the family. This courtyard connects visually and functionally with the interior living areas, extending the experience of the home outdoors.
The Result
This renovation project in Heraklion transformed an older residence into a contemporary family home, improving spatial quality, energy performance, and architectural identity.
