Apartment Renovation: A Contemporary Interpretation of Baroque Aesthetics
About the project
This project involved the renovation of an apartment in Heraklion, where our goal was to reinterpret the richness of Baroque aesthetics and translate it into a contemporary architectural language.
A style quite different from what we usually follow, it presented an interesting challenge. The owners wished for a home with a strong Baroque identity. Our architectural approach focused on expressing the grandeur of the era in a modern way, using clean lines, balanced materiality, and ensuring the functionality required in a contemporary family apartment.
The Challenge
The renovation had to bridge two different worlds.
On one side, the ornate, decorative vocabulary of Baroque design.
On the other, the need for a bright, clean and contemporary living environment.
Our Approach
Baroque Aesthetic with Contemporary Elements
We preserved the characteristic Baroque vocabulary through:
- Carved solid-wood details
- Wall mouldings and gypsum ceiling rosettes
- Soft fabrics and classic furniture lines
- Gold metallic accents
These elements were then integrated into a cleaner, more contemporary composition with minimal lighting, a refined palette and balanced geometries.
White was chosen as the dominant colour of the apartment, bringing light, clarity and a neutral backdrop that highlights the decorative details. Gold accents in the bathrooms and selected interior elements reference Baroque luxury without overwhelming the space.
Ceiling Design
Across the ceilings we combined:
- Gypsum rosettes and ornate motifs
- Modern light fixtures
- Concealed lighting and spotlights to create layered illumination that highlights detail without exaggeration
The Kitchen as a Central Design Element
The kitchen was crafted from solid carved wood, maintaining the classical character of the home.
A gold-finished wine rack adds a discreet sense of luxury, while a window seat incorporated beneath the kitchen window creates a comfortable reading nook, enhancing both functionality and charm.
Bathrooms: Contrast & Atmosphere
- The white bathroom features calm marble textures and clean surfaces that evoke clarity and light.
- The dark bathroom adopts a bolder aesthetic, using black marble effects, vertical fluted panels and metal framing to create a contemporary, scenographic contrast.
Bedrooms with a Theatrical Presence
The master bedroom was composed around a striking visual arrangement:
- A deep green theatrical curtain
- A tall Baroque headboard with gold detailing
- Slim pendant lights framing the bed
This combination creates an environment with a dramatic, yet refined and elegant character.
Outdoor Space
The balcony was designed with stone elements, vertical fencing lines and integrated lighting.
A planter with decorative panels and mouldings continues the interior aesthetic into the outdoor space.
The Result
The architectural composition of this apartment is grounded in a contemporary experience of Baroque aesthetics: attention to detail, proper scale of decorative elements and the essential functionality of a modern home.
The result is a bright, balanced interior rich in character, where tradition meets contemporary comfort in perfect harmony.
